How can I tell the level of comprehension a child has without going through the formal process of testing? Are there "quick and dirty" ways of determining where children are in terms of comprehension? What is the correlation between a quick one-minute timed reading and comprehension? How do you find time to work on comprehension?
I have established before hand the "teach" "ok" response. I give a mini lecture then I say "teach." Then the class will reply with "ok" and turn to their neighbor and tell eachother (simultaneously) what I just taught. I walk around to listen to what the students are saying. Then I get their attention by saying, "class!" when they respond with "yes!" If I feel like some of them don't have it I reteach. If I feel like they understood, then I re-iterate what was just taught and move on to the next mini lecture. I repeat this concept throughout the day. If you would like to see how it is done you can watch this awesome teacher on youtube modeling this concept: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XroJtR9gQc8&feature=related
